Choose Essential Oils by More Than Scent: Inside AAA, AROMATICA's Aromatherapy Academy

Do you have a bottle of essential oil tucked away somewhere at home, maybe a gift or something you picked up after hearing good things about it? It's common to open it a few times, then slowly forget it's there.

The reasons are usually the same. How many drops should you use? Is it okay to put it on your skin? Which oil is right for how you feel right now? When you try to look it up, every search result says something different, and there's no clear way to know what to trust.

That's where AROMATICA's aromatherapy academy, AAA (Apotica Aromatherapy Academy), began. Here's why a brand that has spent more than two decades researching essential oils and turning them into products decided to start teaching, too.

Enjoying a Scent vs. Practicing Aromatherapy

A beautiful scent lifts your mood, and that alone is a wonderful experience. Aromatherapy, though, goes one step further.

Aromatherapy is a complementary wellness practice that uses plant-derived essential oils to support balance in the skin, body, and mind. It's more than a matter of taste in scents. It's a way of caring for yourself: checking in with how your body and mind feel, then choosing what you need.

That's why aromatherapy is less a special-occasion treat and more an everyday wellness practice. A night when sleep won't come, an afternoon buried in work, a change of season that leaves your skin and scalp feeling sensitive. When you can choose what you need in each of those moments, aromatherapy becomes part of your life.

This is the kind of aromatherapy AROMATICA wants to share: one that doesn't stop at loving and buying scents, but becomes a way to take care of yourself.

More Than Two Decades of Essential Oil Research

Our founder, Kim Young Kyun, first discovered aromatherapy in Australia, where his family lived. It was a place where people paid attention to their bodies and minds first, and essential oils and herbs were a natural part of everyday self-care. That way of living left a lasting impression.

The more he studied aromatherapy and herbal remedies, the more he noticed something else: synthetic fragrances were in the food and cosmetics he'd been using without a second thought. Petroleum-derived synthetic fragrances raise concerns for both people and the planet, and some have been linked to hormone disruption.

If great products could be made with scents and ingredients from plants alone, there was no reason to use synthetic fragrance. That's why, since day one, AROMATICA has made its products with essential oils as natural fragrance instead of synthetic ones.

We've been doing this since 2004: choosing which ingredients to use and where to source them, testing how to blend them to benefit skin and body, and feeding the results back into our products. Rather than taking known benefits at face value, our research team measures properties like antibacterial and antioxidant activity in our own lab tests and builds those findings into our formulas.

Making products has always been a way of researching essential oils. Everything AROMATICA does comes back to one thing: studying essential oils, applying them to products, and bringing the benefits of medicinal plants into forms you can use every day.

What Products Alone Couldn't Say

As a brand, we can find great ingredients and put them into our products. But once a product is in someone's hands, the story changes.

Why this plant? How should you use it? How should you use it for the way you're feeling? These things are hard to fit into an ingredient list or a few lines of directions on the back of a bottle. It's also why so many people buy great oils but never really use them.

That's why AROMATICA has long offered classes and workshops where customers can learn and use aromatherapy firsthand. Two people can hold the same oil, but the one who understands it can do far more with it.

The goal isn't to memorize benefits. It's to learn to read how your body and mind are feeling, figure out what you need right now, and choose the right oil yourself. It's about going from someone who uses essential oils to someone who knows how to choose and apply them.

That called for more than a one-off class. We needed a learning path that builds step by step from the basics to real-world use, where you can check what you've learned and keep building on it.

From One-Off Classes to a Full Curriculum

AAA (Apotica Aromatherapy Academy) is AROMATICA's aromatherapy academy. It grew out of the classes and workshops we've run for years, now specialized and structured into a full program. Through AAA, we share the experience, research data, and scientific evidence we've gathered from making our products.

The name says where we're headed. "Apotica" combines "apothecary," the traditional place where medicinal plants were prepared into remedies and the forerunner of today's pharmacy, with "-ica," a nod to AROMATICA. It reflects our aim to take the scents and benefits of medicinal plants, built up over thousands of years of human history, and reinterpret them through modern, evidence-based aromatherapy.

The biggest change is that AAA is a registered lifelong education facility under the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Core courses follow a set curriculum and schedule. Complete both core courses, Aromatherapy Essentials and Applied Aromatherapy, and you'll be eligible to take the Integrative Aromatherapy Specialist (IAS) exam, a private professional certification. It's a step-by-step path that takes you from the basics to real-world practice and turns what you learn into a credential.

Aromatherapy Essentials (4 weeks): The fundamentals of aromatherapy and how to use it

Whether you're brand new to essential oils or have tried them a few times without really knowing how to use them, this course is an easy place to start. It answers, one by one, the questions you've probably wondered about.

  • Is smelling something nice the same as aromatherapy? Learn how aromatherapy differs from simply enjoying a scent, starting with the basics: what aromatherapy is, how plant scents have been used throughout history, and how they're used today.
  • Why do two lavender oils differ in price and scent? The same name doesn't mean the same oil. Explore how botanical name, growing conditions, and extraction method shape scent and composition, and learn how to spot and choose a quality essential oil.
  • Why does a scent bring back old memories and emotions? Follow how scent travels through your sense of smell to your brain, and discover why scent, memory, and emotion are so closely connected.
  • Can I put essential oils straight on my skin? Learn the basic rules: how many drops to use, why oils are diluted in a carrier oil, and how to adjust for your skin.

Each week, you'll make something with your own hands, from a room spray and a blended roll-on to your very own perfume. It's a chance to put what you've learned into practice by choosing and blending oils for your own taste and purpose.

Applied Aromatherapy (6 weeks): Putting what you've learned into everyday life

This course is about understanding your body and using aromatherapy in daily life. If Essentials covers the fundamentals, Applied explores the changes we face in body and mind day to day, including stress, seasonal wellness, scalp care, aging, everyday aches, and the different stages of a woman's life, and how essential oils can fit into each one. Weekly blending sessions tied to each topic let you put it all into practice.

Beyond the Core Courses: Discovery Class & Special Workshops

Discovery Class is a hands-on class where you learn essential oil basics through aromatherapy's seven core benefits and make your own roll-on. Special Workshops are held from time to time and invite experts, such as perfumers and pain specialists, to take a deep dive into a single topic.

What Changes After You Learn

By the end of the course, the essential oils you've been keeping on the shelf finally get used. The oil you forgot in a drawer is back in your hands.

The way you choose changes, too. Instead of picking an oil just because it smells nice, you'll also consider how your body and mind feel right now. Even with so much information out there, you'll know what to look for and what to filter out. And beyond standard directions, you can create your own blends to suit your goals and how you feel.

AAA isn't only about earning a certification. We focus on building the skills to choose and use essential oils on your own, in everyday life and in a range of professional settings. After you finish, you can keep learning through our community and follow-up programs. As you try what you've learned, one step at a time, aromatherapy naturally becomes a small wellness habit.

We especially recommend AAA if you've used essential oils but aren't sure you're using them right, want to properly learn how to care for yourself through scent, work in a care-focused field like yoga, Pilates, or esthetics, or want to turn your love of aromatherapy into real expertise.

Choosing a Scent, Knowingly

Knowing where a scent comes from, what it's made of, how it works in the body, and how best to use it is a little different from simply picking a scent you like.

Once you understand that difference, aromatherapy is no longer reserved for experts. It becomes an everyday practice anyone can enjoy.

Going one step beyond loving aromatherapy, to understanding essential oils and using them with confidence. That's the change AROMATICA hopes to create with AAA.
